What’s Your Favourite App Launcher for Linux?

Sometimes there are apps that I want to write about but I’m uncertain of why I want to write about them.

Case in pointtoday isSynapse, a smart application launcher (and then some), aone-time mainstay on manya linux desktop.

But Synapse is far from being a new app, so how do Imention it on this site?

Synapse

Synapseis a launcher app for Linux that lets you do common, everyday tasks quickly, all from the keyboard, without using a mouse. It is heavily inspiredby Quicksilver for Mac.

Using Synapse is dead simple: you press a specific keyboard shortcut (e.g., Super + Space ) and start typing out the letters of yourquery, be it the name of an app, file, folder or action.

Synapse returns results as you type, and supports keyboard arrow navigation so that you can select what you are looking for. When you’ve found the right result you simple hit the return key to perform an action (e.g, open, copy, run) or cycle through alternative actions by tappingthe tab key.

Synapse can:

Find and openapplications, files and folders Browse throughfolders Interact with certain installedapplications (e.g., pause music in Rhythmbox) A Subtle Unity Launcher

In many ways apps like Synapse were the Unity launcher before the Unity launcher was itself. It combined app launcher and file finder; and through plugins it could even do things that the HUD would later do, like launch specific actions within apps.

Largely forgotten, but still a sterling piece.

Oh, and it happens to about 2x faster at finding things that the Dash

It’s not alone, either.

Albert is a desktop agnostic launcher, inspired by the ease of use of OSX’ Alfred launcher. Its goals are usability and beauty, performance and extensability. It is written in C++ and based on the Qt framework.

Ubuntu MATE’s Martin Wimpress maintains a PPA providing the latest Alfred builds for Ubuntu distributions.
